Subject: How (lack of) diversity impacts new tech
| | May 30, 2014 | Education isn't the sexiest industry. It's practical, it's serious, and it can be boring. But add a little tech and vavoom! Venture capitalists become very, very interested. Michael Moe, CEO of GSV Capital, invested $100 million in education technology companies like Coursera and 2U. Education is a big market, $4.5 trillion is spent globally, with $2 billion in the U.S. But tech is only a small part of that, the e-learning market is around $80 million, and there's there's plenty of room for competition. Google has released data on the diversity of its workforce, after years of claiming the information was a "trade secret." The data came with the caveat, "we're not where we want to be when it comes to diversity," but Google is not alone in its lack of diversity. The company's mostly white and male staff, especially among the engineers and executives, is in line with national trends, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. How does that lack of diversity affect the tech industry? | | THE NUMBERS as of 3:09 P.M. EDT DOW -9.30 (-0.06%) ; NASDAQ -12.40 (-0.29%) S&P 500 +0.70 (+0.04%) | Mid-day Update | | | Former Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer has reportedly won the bidding yesterday for the Los Angeles Clippers NBA franchise, with a $2 billion offer. Getting one of the world's richest people to replace Donald Sterling is a big win for the NBA. On Monday, the EPA will set greenhouse-gas reduction goals for every state. And some states may be playing catch up. | | | | | |
